Saying the state doesn't have the authority to kill people is the standard boiler plate answer. I find it glib as you'd have to completely eliminate armies and police if you actually believed that.

I'm mainly against execution not because I don't believe certain people truly deserve to die but from the mere statistical fact of a certain percentage of prisoners are wrongly convicted and a certain number of people have and will continue to be wrongfully executed. I just find that price too high to pay to satisfy to blood lust vengeance need to eliminate even to most abhorrent members of the population.

Nah you're right, I'd reserve it to those exceptionally rare cases where the evidence was beyond critique - like people who film themselves raping children for example. Probably school shooters.

There is also the question of what members of society do we use to inflict torture. I've seen documentaries about the lives of state executioners and a lot of them end up with bad psychological problems from the stress of actually killing people, and this is something as detached from the reality of the situation as just flipping the switch for an electric chair. We don't rape rapists, what kind of person would the state employ inflict torture? I'm a dork.
