I'm really sick of Michael Moore (and a lot of other people on the American left) portraying Norway as some sort of social democratic utopia and basically just being a mouthpiece for Norwegian state department propaganda. The cornerstones of our economy is oil (read for example about Statoil and tar sand projects for some of the heinous shit our State Oil Corporation does) and weapons technology (selling to the US, Saudi Arabia, Israel).

Norway may have some nice prisons, but we are the most zealous war on drugs nation in Europe, with the highest # of heroin addicts and overdoses, and Norway has ongoing trials in international human rights courts for excessive use of solitary confinement. Norway regularly ranks worse all other Scandinavian countries on the Corruption Index, there is rampant nepotism, police misconduct. They never show international journalists the shitty solitary holding cells some prisoners are held in for weeks while awaiting trial.

Housing deregulation (Norway has Europe's most deregulated housing marked - a gift to all real estate sharks) is responsible for growing social inequality, and while we may have free college, if you are enrolled in any school you are not eligible for any other benefits (housing subsidies, welfare, medical benefits) so people take massive loans to cover housing and food if they want an education. Public companies have been gutted and sold off to private interests for decades - Norway has actually sold the postal service to a corporation. Most public transportation companies have been sold and an increasing amount of health care services are outsourced to private corporations. Social dumping and illegal labor is widespread.

What I'm saying is that Norway is weasely little vassal state to the American military industrial complex.

Not only that, but Norway also has a fascist white supremacist government. Just take a look how many people of colour are in Norway's prisons. Norwegians are very racist people, obviously.

Briefly summarized: Norway became an independent country in 1905, after declaring our own constitution in 1814. Before then we had 400 years of rule under Danish and Swedish kings. We have always been a backwards fishermen's country with harsh climate and scarce resources, and it's no coincidence that the # of people emigrating to the US from Norway was second only to Ireland (relative to home country population size) during the 1800/1900s. In the period following WWII there was oil discovered in the North Sea, and Norway became a filthy rich oil nation with wealth comparative the UAE et al, but due to more democratic control a lot of this money has been spent on our welfare infrastructure instead of going to oligarch and oil barons. The Labor Party government has had control most of the time (center-left policies) but there was a shift to the right during the 80's when most of the deregulation (The Right Party's Kåre Willoch was prime minister, part of the same global trend with Reagan, Thatcher, Kohl, so on) that has led to today's situation took place. The center has generally been shifted to the right, so the mainstream left wing political parties like the Norwegian Labor Party, US Democratic Party, UK Labor Party, etc. have become very pro-business, pro-capitalist and like to kiss EU, UN and NATO ass.
